The Ringling Museum – The Artistic and Historical Soul of Sarasota

May 2, 2025

More than just a museum, The Ringling in Sarasota, Florida is a cultural sanctuary where art, history, and the magic of the circus intertwine in perfect harmony.

Founded in 1927 by John Ringling—one of the legendary brothers behind the “Greatest Show on Earth”—and his wife Mable, this 66-acre estate on Sarasota Bay embodies their shared passion for art and performance.

🎨 An Art Museum Inspired by a European Dream

At the heart of The Ringling lies the Museum of Art, home to more than 10,000 works spanning European, Asian, American, and contemporary art.
Among its treasures are masterpieces by Rubens, Velázquez, Veronese, and Poussin.
The museum’s Renaissance-style architecture surrounds a classical courtyard adorned with statues and fountains, offering a fully immersive European experience.

🎪 Circus Magic: A Living Legend

Opened in 1948, the Circus Museum was the first of its kind to document the history of the American circus.
It features an impressive collection of posters, costumes, props, and parade wagons.
Next door, the Tibbals Learning Center houses the Howard Bros. Circus Model—a miniature replica of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus from 1919 to 1938.

🏰 Ca’ d’Zan: The Venetian Palace of John and Mable

Overlooking the bay, Ca’ d’Zan (“House of John” in Venetian dialect) is a masterpiece of Venetian Gothic architecture.
Built in 1926, the 56-room mansion reflects Mable Ringling’s refined taste with its stained glass windows, painted ceilings, and opulent furnishings.
Though the couple enjoyed only three winters there before Mable’s passing, the home remains a moving tribute to their love and artistic vision.

🌹 Gardens of Peace and Beauty

The Ringling’s gardens are a haven of tranquility, with palm-lined pathways, elegant sculptures, and Mable’s rose garden, originally planted in 1913.
The Secret Garden—final resting place of John and Mable—adds a quiet, contemplative tone to this botanical walk.
